TUTORIALS: VIDEOS THAT EXPLAIN HOW TO PREPARE A PRESENTATION

1. That video provides a list of important recommandations for preparing any oral scientific presentation.

For me, it most IMPORTANT recommandation was the need

TO PRACTICE BEFORE PRESENTING, because a  presentation is like THEATRE (never like improvisation).

2. This video also provides general recommandations; it is more specifically dedicated to short presentations (10-15 minutes).

3.If you follow the recomman-dation concerning the introduction (context/complication/question/hypothesis), you will also make your conclusion more 'striking' and easy to 'understand'. ;-)

4. Here are general recomman-dations concerning the way to design you slides (but not to prepare your presentation).

5. General recommandations about scientific and more genral slide presentations.

Fast English ==> it can also be good to train your understanding.

Mrs Leary shows also how a you must speak and behave to attract the audience.

6. A more casual video but the recommandations of that Swiss guy are VERY clever!

(Swiss precision and quality ;-) ).

Enjoy !

                                     EXAMPLES

1. A Spanish lady presents a subject (biochemistry relatd to cancer) for which you probably not have enough background. But you are scientists, so you can see how she presents her reserach questions, material and methods sections, results, discussion + conclusion. You can also see how she behaves during the presentation.

Moreover, for her as for you, English is not her native language, but you can see that she is not reading notes, but 'telling a story' bsed on the slide. Her English is not always perfect, but she demonstrates that she knows what she is speaking about.

And finally, note that her timing is perfect (exactly 10 min). This is the result of good "PRACTICING BEFORE PRESENTING" ;-).

2. This Korean lady presents an already published paper in which she was not invovled. And this is a good exercice for bering able to cathc what is important in a paper. Moreover, she has to follow all rules of a presentation, as if it was her own work. In addition, she has to give her own opinion on this paper, what is also a very good exercice.

3. This defense concerns 'solide waste management in Jordan', very basic science, thus it is easy to understand for all of us.

The slides are nice, but not well adapted and understandable.

The slide on the left is a good example: many white areas, text on the map is to small, the map does not fit with the scientific question, etc....
